the main idea (con't)
Most schools respect children, and most schools downtown respect individuality. What is unique at Village Kids is how that is expressed, and how the ideals that guide our work with kids extend to adult relationships. Authority should be based on respect, not power. Leadership is representing the needs and opinions of others in decision making. Everyone does the very best s/he can as the sum of their previous experiences, and in compassion and acceptance everyone behaves better. People learn and behave differently within a diverse community. Any true individualized curriculum should be able to accommodate children who fall outside the spectrum of typical development. People of all ages deserve to be taken seriously, but nothing in life should be taken too seriously. There can never be too much laughter or joy in people's lives.
In addition to a distinct philosophy, the school will have all the marks of a good nursery school:
attractive, convenient, safe environment
small classes
well-trained, highly qualified teachers
high teacher to student ratio
a developmentally-appropriate curriculum that truly comes from the children and their individual needs
well-equipped classrooms with a range of activities
large indoor gym space for gross motor stimulation
lots of music and art built into the curriculum
experienced, on-going school counselor to help with kindergarten placement.
